226. TAGORE, RABINDRANATH.

Chitra, The Macmillan Company, New York, 1914. First American edition, in the year following the first UK publication (being the year of his Nobel Prize award) by the India Society of London. A one-act dramatisation of a story from the Mahabharata touching on themes of gender and feminism and described by his biographer Edward John Tompson as "the crown of [the] first half of the poet's career." An excellent copy in decorated boards in the very good, very scarce dustwrapper with light rubbing and soiling and missing a pinkie-fingernail sized chip to top edge of upper panel. £350
