240. WAUGH, EVELYN.

Helena, Chapman & Hall, London, 1950. Author's presentation copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper to Anthony Powell: "For Tony, the best that I am able to do from Evelyn" and with Powell's bookplate to the front pastedown. Powell and Waugh met at Oxford. Subsequently Powell introduced Waugh to his first publisher at Duckworth - where the former worked - in 1928 and the two remained friends until Waugh's death in 1966. Waugh often called "Helena" his best work and the inscription suggests that he wasn't joking. The novel is based on the life of Saint Helena, the mother of Constantine the Great, whose Edict of Milan in 313 allowed Christians religious freedom. Helena was credited, somewhat later, with the discovery of the cross on which Christ was crucified. Spine gilt a little rubbed, slightly cocked but a very good copy in [supplied] dustwrapper missing a couple of small chips from lower panel. £7500
